Tower Project
The Quinquennial Inspection carried out at St John's in 2022 noted that the church and its parish rooms are kept in good condition. However, there were significant concerns with regards to the condition of the stonework to the tower (above what was known as the Warden's House) and spiral stair turret. There are open joints and water ingress which required urgent attention. There was also quite serious damage to sections of the leadwork.
A schedule of works was drawn up by the parish architect Brownhill Hayward Brown comprising the replacement of defective leadwork flashings to the chimney and hips flashings to various roofs; replacement of a lead valley gutter; masonry repairs; and repointing to the Warden's House.
In May 2024 the scaffolding went up, and the project will last until the end of July. The repair needs are relatively simple made more difficult by the lack of access. The complicated arrangement of scaffolding has allowed us access to areas that would normally be out of sight. It has become apparent that the deterioration to the stonework is far worse than originally thought, and areas of the lead are particularly bad.
The total construction costs are likely to be in the region of £90,000 + fees, however, due to the generosity of various grant funders, there will be very little cost to the parish.
